The King’s Troupe will be performing Shakespeare’s The Tempest in the Town Hall Courtyard from 2:30pm on Saturday 22nd July (weather permitting - play lasts 1 hour 15 minutes)
Come to our cafe and be entertained by Mary Coaten’s (Artistic Director) adaptation of The Tempest, one of Shakespeare’s later romance plays. Set on a remote island, the story revolves around Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, who was banished there with his young daughter, Miranda. With his mastery of magic, Prospero conjures a tempest that shipwrecks his treacherous brother Antonio and other noblemen, stranding them on the island. Through a series of events, Prospero seeks to restore his daughter's future and exact revenge on those who wronged him. The play explores themes of forgiveness, power, and the transformative nature of love.
The King’s Troupe is an inter-generational amateur theatre company specialising in Shakespeare, with 30 current members ranging from 4 to 65+ years, founded in 2010 and based in Hebden Bridge.
Dr Richard Coaten, the group’s founder, says:
“We have no audition process as all are welcome. We do not charge people to attend and we work together collaboratively on each piece. Above all, our work is about widening participation, theatre-making in non-traditional ways, in non-traditional venues nationally and internationally, through the wonderful medium of Shakespeare. For the last few years we have worked on the theme ‘Shakespeare without Borders’, involving those in the immigration system who have helped us find new multi-cultural ways to present the stories; helping us all experience the power of theatre-making in building community.
