December Exhibition - Winston Plowes

Tuesday 29th November - Friday 30th December

Winston Plowes produces his environmental artwork by experimenting with what comes to hand, and accepting the never-ending gift of random chance!

This new exhibition from the local environmental artist reflects on the transience of nature and the beauty in our surroundings.

Winston Plowes

Winston Plowes produces his environmental artwork by experimenting with what comes to hand and accepting the never-ending gift of random chance. He attempts to formalise the coincidental and emphasise patterns that are hidden in plain sight and always carries with him the statement of Andy Goldsworthy who said that “outside we forfeit the right of possession”.

His art responds directly to his surroundings and often evolves from a random incident or on other occasions grows from a seed of thought via a preparatory sketch. Sometimes these framed instances would otherwise go unnoticed in their original context.

Winston says that the more he works with natural materials, the more he has become aware of transience and loss, and wonders if his practice as a land artist could perhaps help him learn lessons of how to live with those ideas.

All the pieces in this exhibition owe their life and/or their death to a light breeze or a sudden change in its direction, the onset of rain or the cooling of the night, the inherent strength of fragile materials, or simply the passage of time - and land art has gifted Winston with a heightened awareness and respect for all these influences.

All the work was made during 2021-2022 and whilst not a direct response to the pandemic, Winston like most people, was forced to think differently about his practice.

Winston Plowes lives and works in The Calder Valley where many of the pieces in the exhibition occurred. He teaches art and creative writing in schools and to adult groups in a wide variety of settings. Find out more about Winston in his interview with HebWeb.

All prints on display are for sale (except for #144, #144 & #177) - Large prints are £70 framed as seen, small prints are £40 framed as seen.
