March Exhibition - Julia Ogden and Rachel Red: God’s Own Country 2

A short exhibition showcasing local artists Rachel Red and Julia Ogden, with a selection of prints and paintings inspired by our great county of Yorkshire.
You may recognise Rachel and Julia as the organisers and curators of our highly successful annual print fair, or from their collections of work often on display in art galleries and cafés throughout the valley. They return this month to the Town Hall for a brief but very welcome exhibition of their locally inspired and created work.
Julia Ogden
About Julia Ogden:
Always a fan of a good story, Julia studied illustration at Edinburgh College of Art. A passion for screen printing followed. She brought to life literary characters she loved in little hand-printed books.
A move to Brighton gave her the opportunity to study a Masters in Sequential Illustration and continue with her making and printing.
A painting career then developed from showing a few tentative paintings in a pop-up shop. Julia painted florals and landscapes and was published nationally and internationally.
Her love of the outdoors and her surroundings still continues and is fuelled by a move back to her home of Yorkshire. Now she paints soft, dream like landscapes of places close to her heart from her studio in Hebden Bridge. She also loves to paint whimsical birds and hand prints a range of screen-printed products. Screen printing has opened the door for her to create not just art to hang on a wall but art in the form of cushions, brooches, mobiles, and much more. Julia aims to make art that makes you smile; bright pictures to escape grey days.

Rachel Red
About Rachel Red
I am a printmaker, designer, and print teacher. In my own work I celebrate wild creatures, special places, and folklore tales.
A lot of my lino prints are all about the forest and those who dwell there. Whether woodpeckers and owls or wild boar and deer, I like to portray the creatures in a simplified graphic habitat, taking references from mid-20th-century design.
The mysteries of the forest and its inhabitants have led me to make a body of work inspired by Northern European fairytales and in particular the 'house in the woods' archetype within the stories.
Some of my work celebrates special places. I depict their wildlife, landscape, architecture, and sense of place in screen prints which take some reference from the optimistic travel posters of the last century.
I work mainly in linocut and screen printing but I also love mono-printing and collage. I use my images to make products in paper, cotton, china, and wood and together these form the Collections. I work from my studio at Northlights Art Studios in Hebden Bridge, where I have also become a print tutor in the adult education program there. I am loving passing on the fantastic print teaching I received, sharing the knowledge and resources I have accumulated, and making a space for people's creativity to flourish.
